In Context 1

For the first phase of In Context, 1997-1999, South Dublin County Council responded to the challenge of expanding the scope of public art programming with a series of distinctive commissions.  These commissions involved working with curators and appointed artists, and taking a fresh approach to public art programming in support of new arts practice.

Patricia McKenna, Life Lines

This work comprises of a bronze sculptural piece, located in Rathcoole Park, which is cast from the hands of members of the Rathcoole/Saggart communities.  The artist also compiled a photographic archive documenting different aspects of these communities, which is housed in County Library, Tallaght.

Louise Walsh, Sugar and Spice

Responding to a brief defined by the local community, the artist created two bronze sculptures of children to act as traffic calming devices sited either side of a ramp in St. Finian's estate, Lucan.  Artist led workshops with local children also produced traffic warning signs.

Maurice O'Connell, A Monument for Two Communities

The artist compiled a record of the two communities of Rathcoole and Saggart.  Elements of this record were subsequently buried in a capsule container under a monumental earth mound in Rathcoole Park.

Fiona Murphy, Castings and Apertures

This work consists of glass elements installed in Civic Theatre, Tallaght.  It includes a sandblasted glass panel depicting a life-size figure, whose outspread hands frame a copper cube that incorporates an aperture to the external courtyard.

Maighread Tobin, Rhythm, Cloak and Embrace

This work, located in the foyer of Civic Theatre, Tallaght, takes the form of a rolled-metal sculptural triptych inspired by the dramatic moods of the theatre.
