How a person takes possession of a bus journey; how different loops converge on, run parallel to or diverge from the built transport infrastructure; and most importantly, how a City Loop opens up or closes off possibilities of social interaction.”

The third strand of the South Dublin project involves filmed sequences of a person walking and talking, recollecting details of an everyday journey. The place the person is walking may not have anything to do with the journey, which will be conjured in the form of cinematic ‘flashbacks’ within the film sequence. We are presently preparing walks with 15 Dubliners.
South Dublin writer Eileen Casey wrote Black Ball Gown, a prose-poem that recounts her journey thirty years ago as a young country girl new to Dublin. Anne and Denis have recently recorded the piece with the actress Ann O’Neill, to provide the soundtrack for a video work of the same name.
The young poet Colm Keegan told them about his experiences growing up in Clondalkin and its transformation from a village on the edge of the countryside to its present form of a sea of houses and cars. The CityLoops project for South Dublin County is conceived as the first phase of a global project for Dublin. This Portrait of the City, of the beauty and agony of its everyday life and of the universal issues embodied in the private preoccupations of its citizens was not meant to stop at an administrative boundary but at the natural limits of the city. The project is conceived as a long term artistic endeavour, perhaps five to seven years of work, to create an artwork that can really contribute to Dubliner’s understanding of their city and how it is developing at the beginning of the 21st Century. To date we have recorded CityLoops with people from all walks of life, the MC (multicultural) teens in Jobstown, single parents from Brookfield in West Tallaght, teachers, writers, librairians...
